RAW Artist Showcase: Unearthed

Usually, the closer in proximity the words hotel and art find each other in the English language, the more prominently the word kitsch gets written in people's minds. Fortunately, the RAW Artist Showcase: Unearthed at the Jet Hotel in LoDo last Thursday took a little air out of that stereotype.

The monthly RAW Artist Showcase is an exercise in variety as guests are presented with an environment offering the gamut in artistic criterion. The Unearthed showcase featured a variety of talent including Kathryn Petroff's paintings, Jed Davis’ hand-crafted, industrial-tinged woodwork, and the whimsical excess of Enlightened Playtypus’s Seuss-like fashion. All of that in addition to a cowgirl clothed in only a hat, boots, and body paint courtesy of fireman-paramedic by day, body-painting artist by night, Alan Anderson.

Staged on both the lobby and lounge levels, guests were surrounded with the work of visual artists whose viewing was interspersed by performances by Dr. Melanie Milow, Randy Ricks, and the Enlightened Platypus’ fashion show. The mixing of dynamic and static provided a favorable pace for the art intake. This rhythm carried itself throughout the night as the show never lacked for energy. This was certainly helped by a hearty turn-out that was a crowd without ever being crowded.

While adding energy, the guests sometimes distracted from the showcase as a few seemed more likely to check themselves out in the reflection of a stray window or mirror than the art itself. The effect of the DJ's music was also a bit ambivalent. For the most part it aided in setting a lively tone for the show, though sometimes the constant four on the floor club beat did sometimes remind you more of someone incessantly knocking on your door that you wished would just go away. While the music was never truly irritating, it was a welcome change of pace when the bluesy rhythm and jazzy treble of Randy Ricks took the wheel for the remainder of the night.

In sum, the art showcased had something for everyone and was, as one showcase-goer commented, "not a bad way to spend a Thursday night."
