Vivian Girls with No Joy and School Knights @ Larimer Lounge, Doors 7:30, $13
Tonight at Larimer Lounge will be one of those nights where even though there is an official headliner, headliner and opener will be equal in my mind. Vivian Girls are on the tail of their third full length, Share the Joy. The band is an all female three piece known for garage pop that reminds me of the Dum Dum Girls. The new album is less lo-fi than the rest of Vivian Girls' work and therefore cleaner and simpler sounding. I have yet to see them perform, but with a vocalist/bassist named Kickball Katy, what could go wrong?
Its funny that for their post Share the Joy tour the Vivian Girls chose to take a band called No Joy along, but it is for a good reason. No Joy is a garage rock band with dim, psychedelic vocals signed to Mexican Summer. Their label-mate Bethany Cosentino of Best Coast is a huge fan and No Joy went on tour with Best Coast and Wavves and their song "Hawaii" is included on the Summer is Forever E.P. that also features tracks by Best Coast and Wavves. I am personally a huge fan of the quirky, carefree, angsty cultural output from Best Coast and Wavves and love that No Joy is associated. Basically there is no way they aren't really awesome. And on top of that their album Ghost Blonde features a track called "Pacific Pride" named after Denver's own Pacific Pride.
