It all started with chocolate. As we already know, the Swiss do fantastic things with cocoa, sugar and butter - and Andre's is no exception. What started as a chocolate shop in Kansas City has become an eatery chain with three locations - and Denver is very lucky to have one of them. The desserts here are out of this world, and they are just the end of the meal! Everyday, this small bakery cranks out truffles, chocolates, cakes and tiny, individual serving pastries of every variety.
Andre's is a lunch place that serves just two entree choices per day, which allows the small space to serve hundreds of eager patrons in just a few short hours (Tuesday - Saturday, 11 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.). The portions are European and so is the food. You can get the most amazing quiches here, which they call cheese pie, and full-size ones can be taken to-go.
Other delicious dishes I've had over the years include beef tips in gravy with potatoes, chicken curry with pasta and ground beef popover with broccoli. These dishes might not sound like anything special, but trust me, they are uniquely Swiss and always tasty. Entrees come with beverage and dessert, and I am giddy each time the dessert tray comes by, holding an array of sweets you will not see anywhere else in Colorado. Try their famous Napoleon, a layered cake with a savory dough and sweet pink icing, or the chocolate mountain; a perfect hybrid of cake and fudge.
And like kids in a candy store, patrons always feel the pull of the shining glass dessert cases as they pay their bill, ordering a box full of pastries to go home with them. Andre's also makes cakes to order for special occasions, and has a morning tea and pastry service on Saturdays.
The next time you have a sweet tooth, or when you're up for a terrific lunch in general, give Andre's Confiserie Suisse a shot.
