I heard that Encore had a new mixologist on board and has been playing with their drink menu, so we headed in for a quick drink before dinner. This being being one of the rare establishments in town to serve a mint julep, we ordered one and were promptly forewarned that you’ve really got to like bourbon to like this drink. And boy, they were not kidding. The julep is served up tall, with plenty of mint, and a big helping – 2.5 oz. to be exact – of strong bourbon. It goes down pretty smooth, but watch out for that one! Those that are not fans of whiskey should definitely steer clear.
The next drink was the East Side Daiquiri; a light and drinkable rum, lime and simple syrup concoction shaken and served in a martini glass. This one is easier on the palate and probably more preferred with the ladies. I found the cardamom bitters to be a terrific aromatic addition.
Feeling like it was a burger and fries kind of night, we then ordered the pulled pork sandwich and the lamb burger. The pork sandwich was overstuffed with tender pork bites, marinated in their curiously delicious rhubarb-ginger BBQ sauce, paired with apple slaw. After about half a sandwich, I found this combo to be a bit too much on the sweet side, but it is a giant helping for the money, so this could be attributed to simply eating too big a serving. The lamb burger is served on flatbread with tzatiki sauce, a tart, creamy Greek yogurt spread. It was soft, flavorful and perfectly cooked.
I must add that I love, love, love Encore’s fries. They are super thin cut, crispy and soft at the same time, and arrive drizzled with a thin topping of house mustard. The mustard has just the slightest bite to it; a perfect marriage to the salty fat of the potato fries.
The atmosphere, great service and terrific drinks are just the beginning of the experience at Encore. Their food was fantastic all the way from the price and presentation to the blending of flavors. Next time you’re in the City Park area, check out Encore on Colfax!
